Visiting Arona
Arona was one of the most important towns on the way connecting Switzerland and Northern Europe to Lombardy. It is well-known all over the world because St. Charles Borromeo was born here – the famous colossal statue of the saint still reminds us of him.
Starting from Piazza del Popolo one of the charming places in Arona you can admire the Rocca Borromeo on the other side of the lake, a Gothic building of the fourteenth century, the Broletto, and the beautiful building of Santa Marta church.
Walking through the lovely Corso Cavour historical and trading centre of the town, you can reach the Piazza San Graziano with the Archaeological Museum a small, but meaningful collection of prehistorical, Roman and medieval finds, discovered in Arona and in its outskirts , and the San Graziano church which was in origin the church of the Benedictine Abbey.
Going on, we arrive in Via San Carlo, on the right side we can see the Santa Maria church consecrated in 1488, inside you can admire the Polittico painted by Gaudenzio Ferrari.
We also suggest you to visit St. Charles statue. You can reach it using the bus leaving from the railway station Orta and Isola di San Giulio
Orta is a renowned tourist centre and a summer resort.
Monuments and interesting places:
a. The Palazzotto
b. The church of Santa Maria Assunta
c. Villa Bossi, this Villa is today the Town Hall. It has a beautiful garden overlooking the lake
Wonderful is the Island of San Giulio, whose perimeter is of only 650 metres. Mystic symbol of the lake area is the “ Mater Ecclesiae”, seminary built in 1844. Interesting and peaceful is the walk around the island and its villas , gardens and views of the lake.
The basilica, of clear Romanesque structure, is built to a Latin - cross plan and has a nave and two aisles with apses. Note also the frescoes representing Saints; these were partly painted by the pupils of Gaudenzio Ferrari and by members of the Cagnoli family.
